North Point Gold Regatta (Qualifier for the District Champs)

            The North Point Gold regatta took place at the Savannah Yacht Club, hosted by the Savannah Sailing Center this past weekend, Saturday and Sunday the 3rd and 4th of March.  Fifteen teams participated in a total of 13 races.  Saturday’s conditions started out with very light westerly winds and a ripping outgoing current.  The first A division race was a difficult one with many not finishing within the time limit  The race committee struggled with light very shifty winds and moved the course several times during the day to try and provide better conditions.  Winds picked up as the day went on and sifted to the right a little making it possible to sail close to the yacht club for many spectators to enjoy. After 8 races were completed the first day, there was only an 11 point spread between the 2nd place team Academic Magnet and the 6th place team Richmond Hill.  Ashley Hall was in the lead.  All teams returned Sunday to face an initial 12-15 knot breeze which built as the day went on.  Five races were completed in each division on Sunday.  Congratulations to James Island who not only sailed awesome on Sunday but won the regatta on the water instead of in the protest room.  Ashley Hall finished in 2nd place only losing on a tie breaker.  A great job was done by Ashley Halls B division who finished in 2nd place 20 points ahead of 3rd place.  James Island dominated B division winning by 11 points  and Richmond Hill dominated A division winning by 13 points.  The top 6 teams that will advance to the District Championships are James Island, Ashley Hall, Richmond Hill, Porter Gaud, Bishop England and Academic Magnet. Good luck to these teams at Districts!  It was great sailing both Inland and Coastal teams together in this one.  We enjoyed the many new faces.
